Strong earthquake hits Marrakesh

Friday 8 September 2023. At around 23:00hrs local time the city of Marrakech was struck by a 6.8 magnitude earthquake, according to the interior ministry. This has been the deadliest earthquake to hit Morocco in over 60 years. There are now reported 2,681 people who have sadly lost their lives with a further 2,500 injured from the quake. Many of the fatalities were in the surrounding districks of Marrakech.

The epicentre of the quake was just 44 miles South-West of the RAK Marrakesh airport., with cities like Casablanca and Rabat feeling the quake.

Relief efforts will be challenging as many remote villages where the quake struck are hard reach within the Atlas Mountains.

Many of the inhabitants of the Marrakech took to the streets afraid of the aftershocks from the earthquake.

The USGS have said this is the strongest earthquake to hit Morocco in more than a century.

Flights from Marrakesh airport

Flights from RAK Marrakech airport remain unaffected due to the earthquake. British Airways have their normal flight schedule is as normal. However they have laid on a larger aircraft should tourists want to return to the UK earlier than anticipated.

Also BA have said if passenger want to reschedule dates to and from Marrakesh they can do free of charge.

Algeria, a neighbouring country has said it would open its airspace to aid Morocco with aid.
